GETTING AROUND BASE

Getting around base is easy on bicycle or walking, but it is a couple of kilometers from one point to the other, on roads. When it rains, it pours, so be prepared. Bicycle helmets are required on base.

On base taxis ( roughly $5.50 to get anywhere on base---but since you're on base, tips are expected!) are in high demand when it rains. They will park at the taxi turn around by main gate, and by the NEX/commissary taxi stand. You can flag one down if it has the red empty LED sign lit. Many of the buildings on base have a courtesy phone where you can call them to be picked up.

The only problem is, they cannot go off-base.

They have car seats for little kids, cars on base are supposed to have them.

There is a bus that s-l-o-w-l-y goes around base. Get a map, and time table, or you'll spend a lot of time waiting for it. It takes roughly 45 minutes to go around the base, but it can be done, and I was always glad to give my feet a rest! The bus has stops close to all three gates, Womble, Main (Carney) and Daiei (open only weekdays). The buses go in a clock-wise or counter-clock-wise direction. On weekends, I believe they only go counter-clockwise. That's good news if you're going from Main gate or Womble to the Commissary/NEX complex, but then it takes a long time to get back by bus. Just think of it as a scenic tour of the base.
