Okay, so the Japanese don't have to worry about their waistlines as much as we do. You do occasionally see a heavier person who isn't a Sumo. Not often. My point is that they have recently added diet coke type products to their repetoire. Most restaurants do not carry diet coke.
Diet coke can be bought at the NEX or Commissary in 12--12 oz. cans ($3.99 and $2.99, respectively). The commissary also carries the 1.5 liter Japanese diet coke bottles, that have Sarah Jessica Parker's picture on them in the Oriental aisle, not the soda aisle. While not as sweet, it works. They are more into Coke ZERO here.
There is NEX, a diet Pepsi product. It's sweeter than I like, but I can find it in vending machines. The same goes for ZERO. I find it for Y 150 in many machines. About one in every 8 machines has a diet soda option.
All Japanese stores will have the 1.5 liter diet coke/ZERO for $2 or a little more.
All convenience stores (there are TONS of them) will have the .5 liter diet cokes for $1.47.
